Software Management Environment (SME) consists of the Agent Software(AS), which resides in network devices; the Network Management System(NMS) software itself; and advanced development tools. AS is a fullyextensible MIB, resides in network devices, and communicates with thenetwork management system on behalf of locally managed objects. AS allowsthe automatic and dynamic addition and deletion of software objects, andlets multiple users develop software simultaneously. NMS includes a GUI,an SQL DBMS using an object-oriented model, and the SNMP and CMIPprotocol engines. The advanced development tools permit the easydevelopment of custom MIBs. They automatically generate the code neededto make network resident software manageable.
